Curriculum for Wales
At Bryncoch Church in Wales Primary School, we are proud to offer a curriculum that is tailored to the needs and aspirations of our children. As a Voluntary Aided School, we work closely with the Diocese of Llandaff and Monmouth to ensure our curriculum aligns with the values and ethos of the Church in Wales.
The Four Core Purposes
Our school's curriculum is designed to help our children develop the four key purposes outlined in the Curriculum for Wales: Ambitious, Capable Learners, Enterprising, Creative Contributors, Ethically, Informed Citizens, and Healthy, Confident Individuals. Through a range of engaging and progressive learning experiences, we aim to nurture these essential skills and qualities in our pupils.

Our Curriculum
Curriculum Structure and Delivery
Each term, our school creates a whole-school inquiry topic, based on children’s interests and questions. We begin by encouraging curiosity and finding out what the children already know and want to learn. As the inquiry develops, pupils explore ideas across different subjects, helping them make meaningful connections and better understand the world around them.
We want children to take an active role in their learning, so they are given opportunities to ask questions, investigate, and share their ideas as the inquiry unfolds.
Alongside this, we use a “Missions” approach, where children take on independent challenges linked to their learning. These Missions give pupils the chance to apply their skills in real-life situations, showing their progress in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and digital competence, while also building confidence and independence.
Assessment for Learning
At Bryncoch Church in Wales Primary School, we believe that assessment should be a tool for supporting learner progression. We use a range of Assessment for Learning strategies, such as learning intentions, success criteria, traffic lights, and the "purple pen of progress," to provide our children with clear feedback and guide them towards their next steps in learning.
Continuous Improvement
We are committed to continuously reviewing and refining our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of our children and supports their development towards the four purposes. Throughout the academic year, we monitor the impact of our curriculum, and complete a formal review on an annual basis to identify areas for improvement.
As a school community, we are proud of the curriculum we have developed and the opportunities it provides for our children to grow and thrive. We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child's learning journey.
